    Cyber Security for Everyone: An Introductory Course for Non-Technical Majors

    In this paper, we describe the need for and development of an introductory cyber security course. The course was designed for non-technical majors with the goal of increasing cyber security hygiene for an important segment of the population—college undergraduates. While the need for degree programs that focus on educating and training individuals for occupations in the ever-growing cyber security field is critically important, the need for improved cyber security hygiene from the average everyday person is of equal importance. This paper discusses the approach used, curriculum developed, results from two runs of the course, and frames the overall structure of the course using Bloom’s Taxonomy. Likewise, we discuss the benefits such a course provides to various stakeholders. Challenges and opportunities are discussed

    Conducting "in-person" research during a pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruptions across the world; universities have not been exempt. This has included disruptions in not only the delivery of traditional in-person classes, but also research. In this paper, we detail the efforts undertaken to modify the research protocols originally developed for a longitudinal experiment design with two in-person components to it. In particular, we address the challenges and benefits of this conversion, including issues related to compensation, scheduling, technical issues, and attempts to replace the in-person component of the original design

    Rapid changes in shape and number of MHC class II expressing cells in rat airways after Mycoplasma pulmonis infection

These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.Mycoplasma pulmonis infection in rodents causes a chronic inflammatory airway disease with a strong immunological component, leading to mucosal remodeling and angiogenesis. We sought to determine the effect of this infection on the shape and number of dendritic cells and other major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II expressing cells in the airway mucosa of Wistar rats. Changes in the shape of subepithelial OX6 (anti-MHC class II)-immunoreactive cells were evident in the tracheal mucosa 2 days after intranasal inoculation with M. pulmonis. By 1 week, the shape of the cells had changed from stellate to rounded (mean shape index increased from 0.42 to 0.77). The number of OX6-positive cells was increased 6-fold at 1 week and 16-fold at 4 weeks. Coincident with these changes, many columnar epithelial cells developed OX6 immunoreactivity, which was still present at 4 weeks. We conclude that M. pulmonis infection creates a potent immunologic stimulus that augments and transforms the OX6-immunoreactive cell population in the airways by changing the functional state of airway dendritic cells, initiating an influx of MHC class II expressing cells, and activating expression of MHC class II molecules by airway epithelial cells

    Cultural Values, Information Sources, and Perceptions of Security

    This exploratory study examines the relationships among cultural values, sources of information about a current event, and perceptions of national security. The study uses the case of Edward Snowden and his actions in releasing information classified as secret by the U.S. Federal government. The study compares the perceptions of survey respondents from India and the U.S. at two times soon after Snowden released the information and examines the relationship among cultural values, information sources, and perceptions of Snowden and his actions. The cultural dimension follows the Hofstede cultural values measures of power distance and individuality, measures in which India and the U.S. exhibit significant differences. The survey was conducted using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTURK) to solicit responses in July and August 2013. The results reveal that the U.S. and India respondents agree on some aspects of the case (e.g., that Snowden is a courageous individual) and do not shift their viewpoints from the first survey to the next. However, the respondents differ significantly in their use of information sources and report significantly different opinions on the potential impact of Snowden's actions on national security issues. This limited study revealed an unexpected difference from Hofstede's work in the power distance cultural dimension, raising questions about the use of MTURK for cross-cultural studies.publishedye

    Metal-insulator transitions in anisotropic 2d systems

    Several phenomena related to the critical behaviour of non-interacting electrons in a disordered 2d tight-binding system with a magnetic field are studied. Localization lengths, critical exponents and density of states are computed using transfer matrix techniques. Scaling functions of isotropic systems are recovered once the dimension of the system in each direction is chosen proportional to the localization length. It is also found that the critical point is independent of the propagation direction, and that the critical exponents for the localization length for both propagating directions are equal to that of the isotropic system (approximately 7/3). We also calculate the critical value of the scaling function for both the isotropic and the anisotropic system. It is found that the isotropic value equals the geometric mean of the two anisotropic values. Detailed numerical studies of the density of states for the isotropic system reveals that for an appreciable amount of disorder the critical energy is off the band center.Comment: 6 pages RevTeX, 6 figures included, submitted to Physical Review

    Searching for a Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves with LIGO

    The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) has performed the fourth science run, S4, with significantly improved interferometer sensitivities with respect to previous runs. Using data acquired during this science run, we place a limit on the amplitude of a stochastic background of gravitational waves. For a frequency independent spectrum, the new limit is ΩGW<6.5×105\Omega_{\rm GW} < 6.5 \times 10^{-5}. This is currently the most sensitive result in the frequency range 51-150 Hz, with a factor of 13 improvement over the previous LIGO result. We discuss complementarity of the new result with other constraints on a stochastic background of gravitational waves, and we investigate implications of the new result for different models of this background.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figure

    High frequency of central nervous system involvement in transformed Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia

    Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein deficiency in innate immune cells leads to mucosal immune dysregulation and colitis in mice

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: Immunodeficiency and autoimmune sequelae, including colitis, develop in patients and mice deficient in Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome protein (WASP), a hematopoietic-specific intracellular signaling molecule that regulates the actin cytoskeleton. Development of colitis in WASP-deficient mice requires lymphocytes; transfer of T cells is sufficient to induce colitis in immunodeficient mice. We investigated the interactions between innate and adaptive immune cells in mucosal regulation during development of T-cell-mediated colitis in mice with WASP-deficient cells of the innate immune system. METHODS: Naïve and/or regulatory CD4(+) T cells were transferred from 129 SvEv mice into RAG-2 deficient (RAG-2 KO) mice or mice lacking WASP and RAG-2 (WRDKO). Animals were observed for the development of colitis; effector and regulatory functions of innate immune and T cells were analyzed with in vivo and in vitro assays. RESULTS: Transfer of unfractionated CD4(+) T cells induced severe colitis in WRDKO, but not RAG-2 KO, mice. Naïve wild-type T cells had higher levels of effector activity and regulatory T cells had reduced suppressive function when transferred into WRDKO mice compared to RAG-2 KO mice. Regulatory T-cell proliferation, generation, and maintenance of FoxP3 expression were reduced in WRDKO recipients, and associated with reduced numbers of CD103(+) tolerogenic dendritic cells and levels of interleukin (IL)-10. Administration of IL-10 prevented induction of colitis following transfer of T cells into WRDKO mice. CONCLUSIONS: Defective interactions between WASP-deficient innate immune cells and normal T cells disrupt mucosal regulation, potentially by altering the functions of tolerogenic dendritic cells, production of IL-10, and homeostasis of regulatory T cells
